Check out the Wordles for the United States Declaration of War and the German Response to the United States. In a short blog post predict what you think was the tone of the US declaration of war. Also, discuss what you think the German response said.
The United States was not yet at war and was one of the first big major wars the United States has been in so the US was more concerned on the military and helping the other nations. Where as Germany was already at war and was pushing to cause the other nations to starve and stop the US entering the war.

World Safety
Your squad breaches the door of a suspected insurgent safe-house. After securing the building and flex-cuffing six people found inside, one of your team members finds materials typically used in making IEDs (bombs) under some floor tiles. There is reliable intelligence that the IEDs are also being assembled in another location nearby. Unfortunately, this location has not yet been specifically identified. Finding this other "bomb factory" is a vary high priority.
a. How should you treat these detained prisoners?
b. What are some potential long and short-term repercussions if any of these detainees are mistreated?
In the matter of war or that people lives are in danger i would treat the matter very seriously. Scaring the prisoners into telling me where the next location is will be my main goal. Killing some of the prisoner to scare the ones that are left. And beating some of them so they know we will not give up until they tell me. Some of the repercussions could be in trouble with your own government and possibly starting a war. Which is not wanted. But I'm sure you would get into some sort of trouble if you killed some prisoners for information. But its for the safety of the world to do so. So it is nesscary.

Weekly Article 12.10.10
With the introduction of video games such as Call of Duty, and other war shooter games, a controversey has brewed about the violence they recreate. Read the following articles dealing with video game violence. In your weekly article this week, aruge for one side of the video game violence debate. Should games that portray war, such as Call of Duty, be allowed to exist? More importantly do they diminish the violence that actually occurs in real war (keeping in mind there was no "reset" button for soldiers of World War I)?
Video game violence has been around for years now. Kids and teenagers around the world have seen the violence in movies or video games. So its nothing new to them when a new video game comes out because they have seen it before. I believe that Call of Duty and other violent games should be allowed to exist because they should know what real war is like or can be like. War is a bad thing and for kids to know this early might make them a peaceful person. But the only reason kids that are under a certain age cannot buy the games if it is too violent. A lot of the times the parent buys the game for the child so the parent is in wrong also. I think if you are old enough to buy the violent games there's nothing wrong with playing the game. I do not think they diminish or lessen the violence that happens in real war because when you are in war, you would be very scared and worried for your life. Call of Duty is not going to be in your mind when you are in a war. Also no matter what people are going to fight, a video game is not going to effect the war or the fighting in the war. The video game to the left is called Grant Theft Auto, one of the most violent video games on the market. Many teenagers and kids play this game. As you can see in the bottom left hand conner there is a rating. The rating stands for mature which is 17+. So you have to be 17 to buy the game. But the video game is completely fake to me. It is not even close to reality and a war seen. In the video game you can go around killing people which is not nice. Many people get ideas of video games and do it in real life. This would be the only reason to me as to why they should not be allowed in society. In real life, you do not have a extra life or a pause so you can keep living. If you get shot most of the time it was most certain death, you unless you were lucky and controlled the bleeding and got the bullet out fast enough. In world war one, the great war many times doctor's would have to amputate body parts for the person to live. To me they make violence in war more worst because they have seen what they can do on the video games and want to do it in real person. Most of the time this is not the case, if you live like you do in a video game you will die pretty fast. So i do think violent video games should be able to exist because its the parents choice if the children can play it or not. There is nothing wrong with them because they are not reality and do not lessen the war, nor do they make it worse.http://www.popfi.com/wp-content/uploads/grand-theft-auto-4.jpg

Air Combat
World War I introduced lots of new technologies on the weapons front, one of them being the airplane. Check out Dogfight (that's what you call two planes fighting air-to-air combat), play it, and write about what you think was going through a pilot's mind while fighting in an air-to-air combat situation. This fighting style continued through the Cold War.
When a pilot takes off his airplane to go into combat with another airplane, the feeling must be terrible. They would try their hardest to move the plane without getting shot at while the other man would defend his plane with a turret gun. The turret gun had to be very smart because he could shoot his own plane up when the pilot moves the plane and the plane could crash. So there are many things you have to think of while you are fighting in a dog fight. Another through that would be on the pilots mind was if he was going to live or not. Also when its time to land the plane and return home would also be running through his mind. Pictures of family members are also placed in the window so they can have their last view of loved ones. Because there was a 50 to 50 chance of getting shot out of the sky. Now a days i would feel more safe in an airplane because the jets are much more fast and safer. They now don't have dog fights anymore they just drop bombs on targets.

Artillery shells
At the time - World War I, the Great War, saw the greatest number of casualties the world had ever seen. Watch the trailer from the remake of Gallipoli (1981) and predict what you think caused the great number of casualties. Be specfic pulling specific examples from the video clip. Also discuss what impact the number of casualties had on society.
From watching this movie trailer and stuff i have already known i predict that most of the casualties where done by disease among the trenches and battle wounds not been treated. Remember that this is in the year of 1915 so there where not many ways too stop bleeding or to survive the bleeding. Many times you would have to cut of arms and legs so that the casualty could live. Another cause of the great number of casualties in world war 1 was the invention of artillery which killed and wounded many people from the shrapnel that the bombs produced. Sinking of battleships and navy fights also killed a lot people because if the boat was hit by artillery from another ship, the ship would sink and it took many people to man a battleship. The last cause of many casualties was because of gun to gun warfare. Which many people where slaughtered in the battlefield.

Now that you are an expert on the topic of imperialism and all that it entails... find a current event article that gives readers an example of imperialism (not involving the United States). Provide a link to the original article and then provide some discussion as to why your selected example is imperialism - and go one step further - is it economic or political imperialism (or both).
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-11799078
In this current event the stronger nation being Russia has captured a Israeli mercenary back to his country after being caught since 2001. This is an example of imperialism because the stronger nation has already oppressed the weaker nation by capturing a spy. But since the weaker nation could do anything to get the captured spy back this is an example of imperialism. Like the queen of Hawaii could not do anything to stop the United States annexing the islands. The spy was found in Colombia and the Russians captured him and has just been released back to his home country.

Digging holes for Bodies
Read this post from a blog documenting the history of West Indians (people from the Caribbean islands). The blog post discusses several of the issues faced by workers during the construction of the Panama Canal. Write a short journal entry from the point of view of one of the West Indian workers detailing the dangers they faced during the construction of one of the most pivotal man made structures in the world.
Dear Journal
Arriving in Panama, with numbers. Many of my friends where scared of death. I was not, if i was going to die i was going down with a fight. I would try my hardest to get the job home and return home. I knew that the most common ways to die were Malaria and yellow fever. The only possible thing that could be scaring to me was the heat we had to work in. I was not use to cutting down jungle after jungle for hours on end the dreadful heat. At I was a white man, we had more chance of survival than the black man working in Panama. Even if the black man lived he would be scared for life of the days, weeks, or months working in Panama. At least i wasn't on the bomb team. Chances of team where highly likely because explosions could happen prematurely or early. Most of the bomb teams were black people so i was lucky in that aspect also. Seeing many people die from railroad accidents was horrifying. It was like working to jobs one building the Panama Canal and the other digging holes for bodies.

The movie I have chosen to reflect the ideas of imperialism is the movie Avatar. A stronger nation oppressing a weaker nation. The movie Avatar is based on the ideas of Pocahontas where the spanish come over and take over the aztecs because they had gold. In Avatar the humans attack the natives because they refuse to move out of the humans way. The humans are the stronger nation and the weaker nation are the natives or the Avatars. In the movie the humans want to collect a natural occurring metal on the planet that sells for a lot of money back on earth. This is why the humans take military action over the Avatars and force them to move away from home tree. It relates to the ideas of imperialism because its the same concept, as in when American went to annex Hawaii. Because they stopped trading sugar with the United States. The United States need sugar so they went annex the country without any casualties. So in Avatar the humans needed to collect the metal and if they did not their was no need for them to be there. In the end of the movie the Avatars fight back and beat the humans and sent them back to their home planet earth. In all imperialism controversies there is a product or crop that is wanted by the stronger nation. In Avatar the product or crop is the metal. Like in other imperialism ideas the crops have been sugar, bananas and other crops or products. Also as well as the crop, the stronger nation trains civilians or people from that country to overthrow the countries government so that they do not have to start a war over it. In Avatar they find the technology to turn humans in to Avatars to learn their ways and to beat them. Its the same idea as the school of Americans its just expressed in a different way in the movie Avatar. In the school of Americas the American government trains people from a different country to learn military tactics or other important lessons to get rid of another man in charge of a country. They do this because the American government does not like the man in charge because they are not pro-american. They want to pretty much turn most of the countries around them in to pro-american so they do not have to go to war with anyone. Doing this is kind of like bullying. Like American is the boss of the western world. The movie Avatar was not really a good pick to be chosen to relate to the ideas of imperialism because int he end the weaker nation other throws the stronger nation which would not happen in the real world. But say the ending did not happen it would be a great example of imperialism. Its just like the real world but in a movie.

Conspiracy or not?
During the Spanish American War, yellow journalism was used by American newspapers to gain support for the war. Check out the PBS website Crucible of Empire, and their story about yellow journalism during the war. After gaining an understanding for the concept, find an example of how yellow journalism is used today. For this post, quote a news headline and then comment on how it relates to yellow journalism used during the war. Blog about it.
"Maine explosion caused by bomb or torpedo" was the entry for the United States to start the Spanish American war. This was the headline in the New York times newspaper. It relates to yellow journalism because of how it could of been the United States blowing up their own warship or was it the Spanish doing the torpedoing. We don't know and never will know but it was an excuse for the United States to go to war with the Spain. It made the American people mad and wanted revenge. Thats what yellow journalism is, its making something very small and turning it into something massive so you have a reason to do something. In the headline it could have been bombed by the Americans themselves or torpedoed by the Spanish. Either way American lives where lost because of this. Its is the same as the 9/11 attacks on the world trade center was it Terrorists or the United States government to have a reason to enter Iraq.

Boss of the World
Explore the website for the School of the Americas Watch, an anti-SOA organization that calls for its closing. Look at some of the groups arguments against the SOA. Should the United States be able to operate such an organization and train people in the practice of the coup d'etat? Use the facts from the SOA site to help you formulate your argument. Blog about it.
The United States should be able to operate a school of the Americans in their own country. I disagree with the school of the Americans being another country then the United States because it is their organization. American is made up of a variety of different people. Hundreds of Thousands of people immigrant to the United States every year and most don't speak common english. This is why the school of the Americans is in place to train latin americans military tactics and information about American that is vital. So i don't think the anti-SOA organization can have a say in closing the school of the Americans. But because the United States it the boss of the world they can do this , because no ones going to say anything only their own people. Also training immigrants that could to American is a great military tactic to train the people and hold their position of boss of the world.

Discuss why you agree or disagree with the blogging assessment system used in this course. Your opinion will not affect your grade. You will be assessed on how you formulate your argument.
I agree with the blogging assessment system used in this course for many reasons. History is about the past, and using advances in technology is a great way learn history. My first reason for using blogging to learn is that it is way more entertaining then pen and paper. I could type for a good 2 hours and not get bored. But if i were to write on paper for even 20 minutes my mind would go else where. If it was possible to write for 2 hours which i know is not my hand would probably fall off because it hurt so bad. Blogging is pretty much all of our homework unless we have to study for tests which is a great way for people to get there homework in on time or even early so they can complete other homework. Blogging allows us to access lessons online really fast so we can do it whenever we want if it is on time. I like blogging personally because no one else gets to see my work except for the teacher. Which cuts out people trying to cheat and people copying your ideas/work. It shows how hard you work on the blogs.

Which blogging topic was your favorite from first quarter?
My favorite blog topic from the first quarter had to be Watch an episode of "Gunsmoke" on Hulu. Analyze and write about what stereotypes you saw in the television show, one of the most popular shows of its time. This is a great topic because this was a mirror image of the times we were learning about in class. And it showed us what times where like and also we could watch it like a t.v. Which is using technology and is a great way to learn.

Blogging is a Great Way to Learn
Was your learning different when blogging, as compared to writing just pen and paper? Explain.
When blogging you are able to use vital information via the internet to actually study the question and blog the correct information. When writing on pen and paper its you own ideas and you do not know if your right or wrong. Blogging helps you get your information down faster than writing it and is a lot helpful because it arranges your work well and makes it look neat for whoever is reading it. Also you can keep a record of the blogs that you will be able to show to colleges. Learning with blogging is also easy to do other activities using the internet and review old documents, pictures, games etc. Which is a great way to learn. Too me pen and paper is boring and my hand would start to hurt after a while of writing, blogging is a much more enjoyable way to get your information down fast. Being able to review and edit my work over and over again until it is perfect is a great way to complete your best writing work.

Slave Labor
Factory workers often created music that servd as a form of protest and a way to get them through the long hours of the workday. After reading the lyrics from the "Song of the Shirt", describe what life must have been like for these textile factory workers.
Women who worked in the factories must have been very tired from working almost everyday of the week and having only a couple of hours a sleep a night. Being played minimum wage, life was not easy for the factory worker. Some of the women would fall asleep on the job and would be whipped awake by mangers. They would work through the night and i can image it was exhausting. It explains in the song that every women eyes where red and dim, this mean they where very tired and probably in unhealthy working conditions. A lot of the times women and workers would get injured because of the heavy machines they where working with. Must of the women were starving and had little food to keep them going. They never had a break, which was not right. Conditions like these would never be seen nowadays as it was slave labor.

Immigrating to the United States Through Ellis Island
Explore the primary doc photographs from the Ellis Island website. (You may have to register.) After exploring the photographs, discuss what feelings and experiences immigrants coming to the United States at the turn of the century must have been feeling.
The feelings and experiences that immigrants had coming to the United States through Ellis Island must have been overwhelming. In the photograph to the left, there is a family. Family's where very big back in the 1800's, im talking about having six children is normal. The family are all in there best outfits on going to the United States because they wanted to get into the country because it was a great privilege and chance to do something great with your life. The family must have been feeling excited and nervous because if they did not get in they would be sent back to where they came from. Just entering Ellis Island today is an experience, i cant of imagined what it might of been like to experience it when your family was one of the first to migrate to the United States and who build the country up. Ellis Island was build in a very modern fashion, its looks brand new and after seeing the Statue of Liberty nothing can really beat the Statue. But after Ellis Island families would either go to New York City which was a complete mess. The city was dirty and disease spread fast around the city. But it was still a huge experience in coming through Ellis Island as your first time coming to the United States.

Weekly Article

The American Cowboy first started when the Civil War ended. When this happened many of the United States citizens wanted to move away from the east coast of the United States. So they began to move west. Moving West was a big part in United States history. Because the U.S government was giving out free land to those who can build a house on the land and farm the land so it is well looked after. The government was giving out 100 acres at a time. This is a massive amount of land. The last time the United States government did this was when Alaska had been purchased. But at this time the maximum land you could get was 10 acres. No where near as big as 100 acres. And you still had to look after the land and build a house to keep ownership of the land. This picture to the right is showing 4 men and 4 women all rich land owners in the west. This pictures shows the fashion the women wore back in Cowboys days. It also shows a young Cowboy to the right with a strange looking shirt on. All Cowboys wore hats and so did the women too look unique. The weather must have been rather bad if they where all wearing jackets and long thick layers. In the background of this photo is a white fence. Must have just been built as it looks in perfect condition. Also there is a large building behind them and the fence. My guesses would be that this is the town hall or rodeo place which was a very popular at the time. Many Cowboys would preform and ride horses and bulls for spectators entertainment. You could make a very good income from this but was a very dangerous job. The American Cowboy must have had a very dangerous job. As i was looking through the pictures on Smiths collection, the main job done by the average Cowboy was too rally up cattle and move them from location to location. Also he had to look after horses and move them too. Many of the Hollywood films do not sure them working but more fight against Indians or other criminals. The truths about the American Cowboy is that most Cowboys worked to live. Not many participated in gun to gun combat like the films show. Some however fought against Native Americans or Indians because of land. Another pictures i added was the first picture shown to me by this website. This picture shows some of the hats and wagons they used and wore. The wagon looks very old and could break very easily. I would not like to travel thousands of miles on one of these because it looks very unsafe and unstable. In this picture the men do not look very well equipped to be Cowboys. Most Cowboys carry guns and have lots of back up. This is what i was told when I first started learning about the American Cowboy. Not all Cowboys have guns or are for fighting. Most of them have big jobs in the west. Such as looking after people, farming, moving cattle around, transporting goods between Native Americans and also moving them around so they can farm on the land. So the stereotypes about the American Cowboy can be wrong but somewhat are accurate. As i have learned from the video and from the pictures i looked at.

Stereotypes in Gunsmoke
One stereotype i saw in Gun smoke as a rich white land owner. He owned the land that railroad workers where trying to build through. The white land owner runs over and says you cannot build here, this is my land and i have rights. The railroad workers do not listen to the man and escort him away to continue their work. This was true back in the 1800's when there was so much land to give out that they did not care what land was yours because they had so much of it. Another stereotype i saw in Gun smoke was a man that was hung because he was accosted with murder. With out thinking the Cowboys throw a rope around a tree and hang the man. He kept saying you have got the wrong man and later in the episode they found out that they did hang the wrong man. This a stereotype of what happened if they through you had done something wrong. You would get no trial or anything and would be put to death. Stereotypes where very clear and correct i thought in this series.

Civil Rights Movement
Discuss the relationships between the treatment of African-Americans during Reconstruction with the treatment of the same peoples during the United States Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s and 1960s.
The treatment of African-Americans during the Reconstruction was very bad and in my view sick and wrong. Many white folks would come to hangings and leaching as a family event. During the Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s and 1960s it wasn't as bad as it was back during the civil war age but still was wrong. After the Civil War African Americans gained some freedoms, such as the segregation which means all people could have white and black schools, benches, water fountains, anything you can think of that is not private they could have segregation. Also slavery was banished but still went on after that. It even still happens today. Sharecroppers where a different form of slavery. African Americans still had there freedom but had to pay more money they earned to the farmer that gave them the land and gave them the tools to earn the cops to sell. They still had to obey everything the white farmer said and if they did not they would loose there land and house. So they would make no money have no money. So they did not really have a choice. It was still slavery in my eyes. During the 1950s it had gotten a little bit better due to more rights for the African Americans such as right to vote. But still no women could vote. Lynching went on in the United States after and before the Civil War. African Americans where burned alive or hanged because of something they where accused of doing. Many of the lynching where sick and wrong. I could never image a human doing something like that. But it just shows that mankind is sick and can do bad things. But back in those days the people who where doing the lynching thought they where doing nothing wrong. If they could see this day and age they would know they have done wrong and would regret doing it. But this happened a lot during Reconstruction. After Reconstruction was over, many African Americans gained jobs but where paid very little and did not make much at all. Only enough to live on. Also if an African American was running for something and a white man was running for the same thing, the posters would be very unfair on the African Americans, because they where mistreated. Mostly the white man would win. The Civil Rights movement changed this, so that African Americans were not mistreated as much. And the voting for something could actually be fair. Also during the lynching, the white folks would make it as painful as possible for the African American that was going to die. They would do this by cutting parts of body off. White folks would also burn the African Americans and would sell parts of their heart and liver for 25 cents. This in my mind is sick. When no one wanted it they would cut it up to the smallest parts. Little white girls would take pictures smiling while holding the legs of a lynched African American. They would act as if they where proud to be seen in the photo. This would make me sick to death if i ever saw i human being treated like this.
During Reconstruction there was great debate over whether the South should be granted amnesty. What are your thoughts? Defend your argument.
When Abraham Lincoln granted amnesty to the south, both north and south were upset. Because the south thought the north had just pitted them and let them back into the United States of America. But some people where just happy that the war was over and they were back with their own country. But the people who wanted to keep slavery were very angry and upset. They were angry because the union was forgiving them for something in there eyes had done nothing wrong and were fighting for a course. The north was also insulted by Abraham Lincoln because they were forgiving the south, when mostly the union did not want to forgive them. Abraham Lincoln was not smart in this situation because its better to have one side on your side then everyone against you. But maybe it was not that bad after all the country did come back together, with slavery abolished.

Railroads During the Civil War
I choose this image because railroads were very important during the civil war. Not only did they transport people but equipment such as guns, artillery, bullets everything that you can think of to win a war. As you can see in the photo that we have far more advanced trains and railroad nowadays. A good tactic in the civil war was to destroy railroad lines so that either side could not get the supplies they needed. The viewer should take away from this photo that railroads were critical during the civil war. Also in this picture you can see houses along side the railroad. There was no train stop, it looked more a bus stop back then. People are standing on top of the trains to release the doors to unload cargo and war equipment. These where steam trains the first train created. Nowadays there are electric trains and trains that burn with coal. Back in the 1800, weather can damage the tracks and a lot of times trains would fall off the track. Train tracks can also buckle due to the heating of metals.

Union Was America
Why was Abraham Lincoln's concern more focused on preserving the Union, rather than slavery?
Abraham Lincoln was more concerned on focusing on preserving the Union rather then slavery because the Union now represented the United States of America as the two where different countries when they split. Slavery was the reason why they where fighting but they still had to protect there homeland.

Running the Country Without a Government
When Thoreau said, "that government is best which governs least", what do you think he meant? Do you agree or disagree? Explain.
When Thoreau said this quote i think he means when the government is doing more and more work the economy is bad. But when the government does not have much to do it means there are not many problems in the country. I agree because say if taxes rise, more money is needed to fuel the government and therefore government has to do work to get there taxes. And if people cant pay their taxes, houses go into foreclosure and there is not enough money circulating. But when the people have enough money to pay their taxes the government does not have to do much work and the economy is strong. If the government does not need to do much then the people run the country, instead of the government. This is good because the crime rate will lower and middle class will become larger.

What Really Happened
Should we change the way we teach younger students about the history of the United States? Explain.
Yes, i do think we should change the way we teacher younger students about history because we are not telling them the truth. Maybe we could leave out the killing and murdering but still explain the truth. If younger students are taught the wrong thing then they will believe it until they are told differently. Telling younger students lies could also effect the way they learn. Its not right if teachers teach students the wrong thing and saying its the truth. Even if it is bad, students cant be brought up thinking that the United States is so perfect. Nothing is perfect in this world. The way where teaching them now is not wrong but its not the truth about what really happened.

The Truth About History
Should countries leave pieces of their history out, especially that which is negative, when documenting these stories? Explain.
I think that countries should not leave pieces of their history out because by leaving the pieces out, you not telling the true history of your country. And therefore lies are being told. Even if it is negative history of your country it is still really important and people want to know the truth. History has already occurred so it does not make a big deal about if it is negative or if it is good. When documenting the stories you should tell every detail the way it happen so people will know the truth about the country. If you are doing a research project on the subject and its not the truth then there is really no point in doing the project if the information you have posted is wrong.
